We can use inlays and onlays to help restore, preserve, and protect a tooth that has become too damaged for a simple filling.

Inlays and onlays perform similar functions but have several key differences. Both are used to help restore and further protect a tooth that has extensive damage that cannot be treated by a simple filling.

They are also often used as an alternative to a crown, as they present a less invasive option and can be used in cases where the damage present doesn’t warrant the use of a crown.

FAQs

What is the difference between an inlay and an onlay?

Inlays are more like fillings and are used to fill a hole or cavity in the tooth, the key difference being that inlays extend to the top edges of the tooth. Inlays are often used in situations where a filling has failed, and the tooth needs repair.

Onlays are designed to be used in a similar way to a crown and fit over the cusp of the tooth like a cap. An onlay requires less of the healthy parts of the tooth to be removed compared to a crown, with just some reduction to the tooth to allow the onlay to fit within the bite of the tooth.

What are the benefits of inlays and onlays?

One of the major benefits of inlays and onlays is that they can often be used in situations where either a filling won’t suffice and/or there isn’t enough damage present to warrant the intervention of a crown. They are also highly durable, often lasting for several decades and they can help protect the tooth from further damage.

Unlike fillings which often lead to more damage to the tooth, inlays and onlays have been shown to help make the tooth treated stronger than before, leading to fewer issues in the future and less need for any intervention.

What is the treatment like?

You should expect to attend two or more appointments while receiving an inlay or onlay. As with receiving a filling, at the first appointment, we’ll numb the area being treated before removing any damaged or decayed parts of the tooth. We’ll then take an impression of the tooth which will be sent off so your inlay or onlay can be made.

At this point, we’ll provide you with a temporary replacement so you can remain comfortable while you wait for your permanent solution. Once the inlay or onlay has been made you’ll return to us here at the practice to have it placed. We’ll make sure it fits and sits naturally in the mouth and that you’re comfortable with the outcome.
