Sometimes, the dental pulp in a tooth can become infected and need to be removed – this is when a root canal treatment might be performed.

Root canal treatments are one of the most commonly performed endodontic treatments, and it’s quite likely you’ve already heard of them. They do have a slightly negative reputation, but they are simply the treatment we use to remove any infection at the root of the tooth. This is done to help save and protect an otherwise healthy tooth and can stop the infection from spreading and causing a lot of pain in the patient.

FAQs

What causes infection or damage in the dental pulp?

Dental pulp can become infected and damaged for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common include an injury or traumatic event to the face – like a sports injury, for example. It can also be caused by the presence of a large filling, leaky filling, or simply by extensive tooth decay.

What symptoms are associated with infected dental pulp?

With regular visits to us here at West Street Dental Practice, we will hopefully be able to diagnose the need for a root canal treatment without you experiencing any uncomfortable symptoms.

Some symptoms to look out for that might indicate you need this treatment include:

  • A loose tooth
  • Pain when chewing or biting down
  • A constant dull and/or throbbing ache
  • Increased sensitivity
  • An abscess

What is the treatment journey like?

Root canal treatments usually only require one appointment, but in some cases where an extensive infection is present, it may require two or three. In most cases, we will administer local anaesthetic at the start of the treatment, so you won’t be able to feel a thing throughout the treatment. The root canals will then be cleaned and any infection removed before the whole tooth is disinfected.

The tooth is then filled with a rubber-type material designed to help stop the further infection and protect the tooth. In most cases, a crown will then be placed to ensure the continued healthy function of the tooth.

We know that root canal treatments have a reputation for being painful and uncomfortable, but thanks to modern methods, techniques, and technology this is no longer the case. There is no need to be worried about receiving this treatment, and our gentle and compassionate team at West Street Dental Practice will make you feel comfortable and well taken care of throughout.
